An important and essential tip to make your life more enjoyable and less stressful is tactile time management!
So what is Tactile Time Management?
- Time Management is deciding how much time to devote to each task in order to be as productive as possible by creating a physical plan.
In order to be successful with this skill, you need to start each and everyday with a plan. Yes, you DO need to write it down, hence the tactile part! In order to be effective with this skill, you should have a visual to follow and not just make it up in your head.
So where do I start?
-Get a pencil (mistakes are bound to happen) and paper and start planning your day! It is okay if you need to erase and change things as you get started. Here are 7 easy steps to get you thinking in the right direction!
Step 1: Set a wake up time and jot it down at the top of your paper. You should get up on the FIRST alarm and do NOT hit snooze. This will set your day up for success. Also, make your bed (write a reminder on your plan, if you need to). This is such a small detail but helps to get your day going with purpose and clarity!
Step 2: Leave A LOT of space and set a bedtime at the bottom of your paper. You should be in bed ready to fall asleep at this time. Do NOT continue to play on your phone as bright phone lights disrupt your ability to fall asleep.
Step 3: Plan essentials such as breakfast, lunch, and dinner in between your wake up and sleep time. In addition, plan out when you will shower, do chores, or go to work or school. Do you have errands to run or chores to complete? Do you have to care for someone else?
Step 4: Fill in the gaps from most important to least important. Are you going to exercise, practice yoga, read,or watch television?
Step 5: Make sure you have something good for your soul, something good for your body and something you enjoy on your plan. Time Management skills will improve your productivity and minimize stress levels, however, self care tasks should be included every day in order to not feel "burn out". In other words, exhausted and not enthused.
Step 6: Post your plan where you will see it. Will this be on your refrigerator or on your bedroom door? Post it somewhere that makes sense for you and where you will be reminded or your plan. You may also want to have a digital copy on your computer or cellphone.
Step 7: Try your plan out. What went well? What do you need to improve for tomorrow? What changes do you need to make? Then, do it and create a new and improved plan!
If you mess up, do NOT give up! If this is a new skill for you, it will not be mastered for months! If you make a mistake, then decide if you need to change something on your plan to make your day go more smoothly or if you just need more practice.
You can do this! Please let me know if you try out my Tactile Time Management Plan and how it improves your daily day to day function, stress levels, and mood!
