After doing some research and digging into the history of my last name, I found out that "Kiehl" is Germanic and means living on the edge of the land. I was ecstatic to discover this because I love German cuisine and wanted to share some of my favorite German recipes that you can make in under 30 minutes!
German Schnitzel
Schnitzel translates to cutlets, therefore, you may use any meat to create German Schnitzel. My personal favorite is with pork, because it is inexpensive and delicious when prepared correctly. I love to teach my students recipes that are delicious and quick because life can get busy! This recipe takes only 15 minutes!
Ingredients:
4 pork or veal cutlets
salt & pepper to taste
2 eggs, beaten
1 cup bread crumbs
Neutral oil to fry (I like canola the best)
Directions:
Place pork between 2 sheets of plastic wrap and pound to 1/4" thick.
Season both sides with salt & pepper
Dip the cutlets into flour, then egg, then breadcrumbs.
Heat enough oil that the cutlets can "swim" to 325 degrees.
Fry 2.5-3.5 minutes on each side until golden brown!
I like to serve these with German potato salad and a fresh salad!
German Sausage Goulash
I use this recipe in my classroom and it is always a big hit with the teachers and the students. There are always teachers and students lined up at the door to see if there are any leftovers as the delicious smell fills the school! This recipe is so easy and so delicious that there are rarely any leftovers, as the students in my class enjoy this traditional German dish!
Ingredients:
6 Sausages
3 Bell Peppers ( I like to use red, orange, & yellow)
1 Onion ( I prefer red onion)
1 1/4 cup beef broth
2.5 T. Tomato Paste
Salt, Pepper, Paprika & Italian Seasoning to taste
Dash Sugar
Olive Oil for the pan
Directions:
Cut the sausages, onions, & peppers into bite-size pieces.
Heat the pan to Medium Heat and then cook sausages, remove from pan.
Cook the peppers & onions until tender in the same pan.
Add the sausages back to the pan.
Add the tomato paste and cook for 1 minute.
Add beef broth and let the sauce thicken.
Add herbs, spices and sugar to taste.
I like to serve this over rice!
I love these two simple yet delicious German recipes, as they are the perfect weeknight dinners! Let me know what you think?
